Camas County grew in population from 1997 to 2007 by 19 percent to an estimated 1,102. Population estimates topped 1,000 in 2001 and dipped slightly in 2005 by a percentage point. Camas County is the most sparsely populated county in Idaho, but contains some of the most beautiful and rugged scenery. With an elevation of 5,069 feet, Camas County has recreational opportunities galore such as fishing, hunting, skiing, snowmobiling, camping and golfing. Fairfield, the county seat and only major town, lies in the gateway of the rugged Soldier Mountain area. The distance from population centers have kept numbers of residents low, however, the outlook for growth over the next decade is sustainable and moderate.
